New for 2018 by popular demand we return to the Finistere. Brittany is a rugged region with a mix of spectacular coastline, historic towns and rambling countryside. It is a land rich in culture, tradition and history. Our tour is based in Concarneau, a charming medieval walled town on the Finistere Coast close to Quimper, the perfect location from which to explore this beautiful region of France.
The contemporary 3 star Hotel de l’Ocean is located a short walk from the old walled town of Concarneau and as the name implies enjoys a stunning position overlooking the bay. All the modern en-suite bedrooms are equipped with TV and hairdryer. The hotel offers a restaurant with panoramic views over the beach, a bar, terrace and outside swimming pool, sauna and hot tub. A lift serves all floors.
Sunday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the mid morning train a glass of champagne and snacks set the holiday mood. We take the coastal motorway to the port of Le Havre and our overnight hotel, the Mercure. A welcome drink of the local Calvados precedes dinner
Monday Departing Normandy after a fine breakfast we travel into Brittany making a stop at Mont-St-Michel where we cross the causeway and spend time on the charming island where the energetic may well wish to ascend to the famous steepled abbey. Coaching on we pass Rennes to arrive in Concarneau and our holiday home for the next four nights.
Tuesday A day at leisure in Concarneau. Here the pleasures are simple: take the land train or stroll to the old town, lunch in a quiet café, browse the charming shops or spend time on the fine sandy beach which lies sheltered within the bay.
Wednesday A full day excursion begins with a relaxing river cruise along the beautiful Odet,’the most beautiful river in France’ to the historic city of Quimper. Not to be missed are the many timber framed buildings, the charming old district of Locmaria, the 13th century Saint-Corentin Cathedral and the Church of Locmaria with its 17th century cloister. In the afternoon we make our way to the stunning village of Locronan named after a revered Irishman. The village is noted for its exceptional architecture and is full of history.
Thursday Another full day excursion. We travel to the beautiful city of Vannes, a well preserved walled city which is a joy to explore! Its narrow streets are filled with pavement cafes, stylish shops and the local market has treats to suit all tastes. A must see are the ramparts and gardens. Our return takes us to Pont-Aven, an artist’s town where Paul Gauguin painted many famous canvases. Historic watermills and floral displays along the banks of the River Aven add to the delights of this pretty town and port.
FridayWe bid farewell to Concarneau and travel back into Normandy to visit the beaches that featured in the D-Day Landings of June 1944 then time in the busy port and town of Caen, final resting place of William the Conqueror and home of the D-Day Memorial Museum. We reach our overnight hotel, the Mercure in Lisieux, late afternoon.
Saturday Departing after breakfast we make for historic Rouen then back along the coast for the afternoon shuttle train back to the UK. We arrive back in our home area early evening after an enjoyable French jaunt.
