Join us on this 6 day tour that is based in the historic city of Newcastle. Northumbria is a tapestry of wonderful sights and attractions with numerous castles and cathedrals, rolling moorlands, intriguing history and quaint villages. We visit some of the best sights and towns that the north east corner of England has to offer including Alnwick Castle.
Sunday From your front door to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Newcastle where we arrive at the 4 star Copthorne Hotel mid-afternoon. We are greeted by a welcoming cup of tea or coffee before enjoying time to settle in before dinner.
Monday This morning we head for the coast and South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson before continuing past Marsden Bay, Whitburn and Seaburn. Here we head inland and drive across to the ancient and historic city of Durham, much acclaimed as a World Heritage Site and dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral and Castle, high above the River Wear. Late afternoon we return to the hotel.
Tuesday We have a leisurely morning in Newcastle with a chance to explore the city. Later we join the boat at the quayside for a fabulous cruise on the River Tyne, with an interesting commentary. While enjoying our cruise we travel under many of the Tyne bridges before we disembark this afternoon and return to the hotel.
Wednesday Today we take the road north past Blyth and Ashington to Amble, Warkworth and historic Alnwick. We visit the magnificent castle which is home to the family of the Duke of Northumberland, dating back to 1309. The castle itself has been featured in many of the Harry Potter films as well as Downton Abbey. The beautifully decorated Alnwick Gardens has many unique features, sculptures and infamous Poison Garden and one of the largest tree houses in the world. After time to look around the castle and gardens we make our way back to hotel for dinner.
Thursday Today’s excursion sees us travel through the north of Northumberland and across the causeway to Holy Island and the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle. After time here we return to Bamburgh with its mighty castle on the beach where we make a stop. Why not visit the majestic castle on the beach or the Grace Darling Museum.
Friday After breakfast we make us of the motorways to arrive home late afternoon after an unforgettable break in Northumbria.
Please note that the crossing of the causeway to Holy Island is governed by tide times and it may be necessary to make a change to this excursion.
