After much success in previous years, we are delighted to return to Shropshire. From poetry to iron, inspiration lives on in the Shropshire Hills. A E Houseman captured its essence in his poems ‘A Shropshire Lad’ whilst early Ironmasters used it to create a graceful bridge that was to herald the Industrial Revolution and The Wrekin is one of the most famous natural landmarks in the county. We include a visit to the beautiful and unspoilt county capital, Shrewsbury and entrance to the memorable Blists Hill Victorian Town.
The Mercure Shrewsbury Albrighton Hall Hotel and Spa, just 4 miles from Shrewsbury town centre, is a beautiful 18th century manor house. Set in 15 acres of grounds with an ornamental lake, the hotel has 87 contemporary en-suite bedrooms, each with internet access, a hairdryer, a TV and tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel also has a swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Although the hotel does not have a lift, some ground floor rooms are available on request.
MondayWe leave our home areas to join the Club Class coach for the drive to Shropshire where we arrive with time to settle in before dinner this evening.
Tuesday After breakfast we make the short drive to Shrewsbury where we have plenty of free time to explore the ancient town and obtain lunch. This afternoon we enjoy a relaxing cruise, with running commentary as we are told about the sights and history of Shrewsbury and the River Severn.
WednesdayWe travel to the beautiful market town of Ironbridge, spanning the banks of the River Severn. Here we are able see the world’s first iron bridge, which was constructed here and now internationally recognised as the symbol of the Industrial Revolution. After time here we make our way to Blists Hill Victorian Town to step back in time more than 100 years. We wander the homes, workplaces and shops before visiting the Bakers, Candle Factory and Blacksmiths. Why not enjoy a pint of ale in the New Inn Pub, enjoy a traditionally made portion of fish and chips or a bag of old-fashioned sweets before we return to the hotel for dinner.
Thursday Today we depart for Kidderminster for our journey on the Severn Valley Railway. Travel back in time on a vintage steam-hauled train as it meanders its way through the town of Bewdley, Arley, Highley and Hampton Loads. The line then climbs its way to the summit before stopping at Bridgnorth, Shropshire’s gem of a medieval market town, where we bid the train farewell. We enjoy plenty of free time here before we return to our hotel for dinner.
Friday After breakfast we leave Shropshire and head for home. Early evening we arrive in our home areas where we are greeted by our awaiting taxis.
