Overview

After the great success of previous tours, we return to the Dordogne Valley, arguably one of the most beautiful and unspoilt in the whole of France. Add to this a favourable climate, terrific wine and gastronomy and it’s not difficult to understand the popularity of this area. Our chosen resort is Le Bugue, a small historic town on the banks of the River Vezere in the Périgord region. Our holiday promises to show you the best that this wonderful region has to offer.

Your Accommodation:

Royal Vezere Hotel - 3 Star

This charming 3 star hotel which overlooks the river and bridge, is located in the centre of the village of Le Bugue. The hotel has a bar and restaurant, a snack bar, a rooftop swimming pool and riverside terrace with great views. All of the comfortable en-suite bedrooms have a television, telephone, hairdryer and minibar. A lift serves all floors.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1

Sunday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the morning train a glass of sparkling wine and snacks set the holiday mood. On through northern France towards the capital, Paris then on to our 3 star overnight hotel, the Novotel in Orleans.

Day 2

Monday After breakfast we continue our drive south heading towards the famed porcelain producing city of Limoges. We visit the emotive site of Oradour-sur-Glane, a town that has remained untouched as a silent memorial of the events of 1944 when the Nazis executed the 600 inhabitants and set fire to the town. Wander the empty streets, see burnt out cars and visit the museum. We continue to Le Bugue and our holiday hotel arriving late afternoon with time to settle in well before dinner.

Day 3

Tuesday A day to relax and unwind in Le Bugue. Today is market day and the vibrant colourful market fills the small town’s streets and offers the chance to sample the tastes and flavours of the region. Later why not visit the impressive Gouffre de Proumeyssac known as the ‘Crystal Cathedral’.

Day 4

Wednesday Today we visit one of the most beautiful villages in France, La Roque-Gageac. The village has a most dramatic setting, situated right beside the river, with many of its houses built directly into the face of the huge cliff that overhangs the village. Above this there are steep steps to incredible troglodyte caves with great views as well as a small botanical garden. We include a cruise on a Gabare a traditional flat bottomed boat down the river past pretty chateaux and rolling countryside. Later we climb to the fortified medieval town of Domme for glorious views of the river.

Day 5

Thursday Another full day excursion. We travel east along the river Vezere, stopping first at the fascinating cave dwellings of Roque St- Christophe, then by delightful Montignac to beautiful Sarlat la Canenda, a medieval town with narrow streets and delightful honey coloured stone buildings. This afternoon we include a ride on the restored ‘Truffle Train’. From the old medieval town of Martel with its seven towers, the train makes its way through high-sided cliffs and plunging ravines on a spectacular journey through the valley, passing over viaducts and clinging precariously on to the side of rocky crags, a camera is a must.

Day 6

Friday A leisurely breakfast before we follow the River Dordogne west to the historic town of Bergerac. We include a visit and wine tasting at the Chateau de Montbazillac in the heart of the rich vineyards, before time to explore the historic old port with its quaint streets and the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac and enjoy a leisurely lunch before our return to the hotel.

Day 7

SaturdayWe depart Le Bugue and head back through glorious French countryside to our 3 star overnight hotel on the outskirts of Paris with time to settle in before dinner.

Day 8

Sunday Our final days travel starts with a tour of Paris then free time in the city before heading north to Calais. We join the afternoon train back to Folkestone to arrive back in our home area early evening.
