The River Rhine is the main artery of Europe, a truly romantic waterway. Our cruise takes us south from Cologne to Switzerland with visits to the superb wine villages of the Alsace, the ‘European City’ Strasbourg and the beautiful lake and city of Lucerne. Monday Our door to door services takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the midday shuttle a glass of champagne and snacks set the holiday mood. On through Belgium to Germany and our luxury river cruiser in Cologne. We board ship late afternoon and settle into our cabins prior to dinner. We set sail tonight for Rudesheim.
Tuesday This morning we cruise through the most well-known stretch of the historic river through the Rhine gorge passing pretty riverside villages with flower bedecked houses. We pass busy Boppard and the Lorelei Rock where the legendary siren lured sailors to their doom. Dotted amongst the wonderfully tendered vineyards are many ancient castles and fortresses such as Burg Rheinfells. Mid-afternoon we arrive in the pretty town of Rudesheim. This popular winemaking town is best known for the ‘Drosselgasse, a narrow cobblestone street lined with a host of beautifully decorated wine taverns and courtyards, with a wonderful atmosphere. We include a cable car ride to the towering Niederwald Monument and entrance to Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum.
Wednesday Overnight the ship has made its way to the historic city of Speyer. Ashore we make a walking tour to the city’s main square for the magnificent 11th century cathedral a UNESCO World Heritage Site one of the Holy Roman Empires most exquisite monuments and Germany’s most beautiful crypts. During our time here we also include a visit to the renowned Technical Museum.
Thursday Another overnight sailing takes us to Strasbourg. After a leisurely breakfast we join the coach for a short tour of the city of Europe then enjoy the views from a different perspective as we enjoy a relaxing canal cruise through the heart of the city. Later there will be ample time to explore at leisure before our ship departs late afternoon for an overnight sailing to Switzerland and Basel
Friday The cultural city of Basel is situated at the meeting point of France, Germany and Switzerland. Today’s excursion sees us drive to the small but impressive city of Lucerne in the historical heart of Switzerland. Set on the shores of its on beautiful lake Lucerne, between the lofty Rigi and Mount Pilatus, Lucerne has a host of attractions including the world famous flower covered 14th cent wooden Chapel Bridge and water tower, the Lion of Lucerne Monument, all easily discover on foot. A lake cruise is, of course, well worth it. We return to the ship for dinner and entertainment.
Saturday Our next sailing starts our return along the Rhine as we make for the port of Breisach. Going ashore we join the coach to follow follow the famous Alsace Wine Route, taking in the pretty traditional villages including the medieval gem of Riquewhir where we include a wine tasting at the famous Dopff & IrIrion Winery. Our return to the ship is in time for lunch then a relaxing afternoon as we cruise north to Mannheim. Our cruise continues overnight
Sunday This morning we take the coach for the short drive to the fine old University City of Heidelberg. Built on the banks of the River Neckar, the city is one of the most popular destinations in Germany. Delightful cobbled streets lined by noted taverns and inns, used as the setting for the Student Prince, nestle at the foot of the restored castle. Views from the castle terrace looking out over the river and broad Rhine plain beyond are memorable. Later we cruise to our final port the fine Roman city of Mainz. The city was home to Johannes Guttenberg inventor of the modern printing press and the museum, bearing his name, contains exhibits of his work and life. Tonight we have a farewell dinner and Captain’s party as we cruise back through the Rhine Gorge to Cologne.
Monday A final breakfast on board before disembarking and retracing the steps of our outward journey back to Calais and the return train journey to Folkestone. We arrive back in our home area early evening after a most memorable Rhine Cruise.
