Overview

For 2020 it gives us pleasure to return to Germany’s Romantic Road – Our base is Würzburg, a beautiful Baroque city and the capital of Lower Franconia, centrally situated in Germany and surrounded by the forest clad hills of the Spessart, at the top of the ‘Romantische Strasse’ or Romantic Road. This was the trade route during the middle ages and still retains much of its medieval character as it winds through the historic towns and forgotten sections of the countryside on its route to Fussen and the Bavarian Alps.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1

Sunday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the morning train a glass of sparkling wine and snacks set the holiday mood. On reaching Calais we continue into Belgium to find our overnight hotel, the Post Hotel Liege, with time to settle in before our evening meal.

Day 2

Monday Our journey continues today as we cross into Germany with a scenic drive through the pretty Rhine Gorge making a stop in St Goar – this lovely little jewel of a town lies opposite the Lorelei Rock and is overlooked by the fortress of Rheinfells, once the most formidable castle along the mighty river. We spend time here before continuing on our journey to Würzburg arriving late afternoon with time to settle in and relax with a welcome cocktail before dinner is served.

Day 3

Tuesday This morning we take to the water for a gentle boat ride along the River Main to visit the beautiful Baroque summer palace of the Bavarian Prince Bishops. The interior is richly furnished in ornate style and the famous Rococo garden is a magnificent creation with lakes, waterworks and hundreds of sandstone sculptures. After a good stay we return to Wurzburg for a tasting at one of the renowned vineyards producing the superb Franconian wines.

Day 4

Wednesday Another day of discovery unfolds with a tour of the region and another wine tasting before returning to Wurzburg for an included visit to the fabulous Wurzburg Residenz. This magnificent Baroque Palace, one of the largest and most beautiful in Germany and surrounded by wonderful gardens, was created in the 18th century by a collection of the finest architects in Europe and is today listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will be amazed by the splendour and incredible frescos.

Day 5

Thursday A buffet breakfast before we board the coach and travel along part of the ‘Romantic Road’ to the town of Rothenburg. This remarkable historic town, with a unique medieval atmosphere, is Germany’s best preserved walled town and featured as the town of ‘Vulgaria’ in the children’s classic ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. There will be time to explore the picturesque old town and perhaps visit St Jacob’s Church with its superb wood carvings or even take a horse drawn carriage ride. After a good stay we return to Würzburg through the winding Tauber Valley.

Day 6

FridayWe leave Wurzburg this morning and head north to spend time in Alsfeld located on the ‘Deutches Marchen Strasse’ and noted for its collection of over 400 half-timbered houses spanning seven centuries, it is no wonder the town and its people inspired the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. After time to marvel at the amazing buildings we continue our homeward drive to Cologne and into Belgium and our overnight hotel, the Holiday Inn in Hasselt.

Day 7

SaturdayWe return through Belgium, viewing some of the sights of the capital city, Brussels, before reaching Calais for the early afternoon train. We reach our home area and waiting taxis early evening.
