Once again, it gives us pleasure to return to the enchanted Black Forest, the most picturesque and magical corner of Germany. Rolling tree lined hills and quaint towns with half-timbered buildings nestling in lush valleys, as well as unique world famous products – cuckoo clocks and delicious Black Forest gateau, make this the perfect area for touring. Our base is Hornberg at the very heart of the Black Forest, perfect for touring the area we include a boat ride on Tittersee and a visit to the Rhine Falls.
This 3 star castle hotel in Hornberg lies in the hills above Gutachtal Valley in the Black Forest. All rooms in the hotel are en-suite and include a TV, hairdryer, telephone and free WiFi. Guests are welcome to relax in the hotel bar or on the terrace. A rich buffet breakfast is served each morning and the restaurant offers regional specialities. Although the hotel does not have a lift, ground floors are available on request.
Sunday From your front door to the waiting coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the morning train a glass of fizz and snacks set the holiday mood. On arrival in France we continue our drive through northern France and Champagne to reach our overnight hotel in the historic city of Reims, the 3 star Mercure.
Monday Leaving Reims after breakfast we continue our journey through France, westwards over the Vosges Mountains to the ‘European City’, Strasbourg where we spend time for sightseeing and lunch. This afternoon we cross the River Rhine into Germany and the Black Forest to arrive at our resort hotel late afternoon. A welcome drink with our hosts precedes dinner this evening.
Tuesday Today we enjoy a full day circular tour through the beautiful Black Forest, first to delightful Tittersee, where we include a boat ride on the stunning lake. We then take the ‘Black Forest Panoramic Road’ affording wonderful mountain and forest views to Triberg, known as the Cuckoo Clock Capital and noted for its woodcarvings, Germany’s highest waterfall and pilgrimage church. We include a visit to the World’s largest Cuckoo Clock in Schonach before returning to the hotel late afternoon.
Wednesday This morning we head south to the border of Switzerland and the mighty Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen. Here we experience the power and beauty of the magnificent Rhine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. The town is one of the prettiest in Germany, with the houses of the pedestrian old town ornately decorated with lavishly painted facades. Our return to the hotel offers more scenic delights.
Thursday A morning visit to nearby Donaueschingen, birthplace of the mighty River Danube. The source of the river is enclosed in an elegant stone basin in the grounds of the Furstenberg Palace, other attractions in the little town include the blue town hall, with the musician's fountain and the St. John’s Church. After time to explore we return to the hotel for an included wine tasting in the Weinstube.
FridayWe leave our hosts this morning and make our way back to France. Our drive takes us through the sombre Hollental Gorge to Freiburg, capital of the Black Forest and a city still retaining old world charm. We re-cross the Rhine and take a scenic drive through the vineyards of the Alsace, stopping at one of the attractive villages before crossing the Vosges Mountains to return to our overnight hotel in Reims.
Saturday Homeward bound as we travel north to the beautiful town of Arras with its busy market, before continuing on to Calais for our afternoon shuttle train to England. We use the motorway to return to our home areas early evening.
