Monday From your front door to the waiting coach for the drive north. We make a stop for lunch in delightful Richmond, then enjoy superb scenery as we travel by way of Barnard Castle and Weardale to arrive late afternoon at Gilsland Hall Hotel for a welcoming glass of Sherry. We have time to settle in before dinner this evening, which is followed by an evening of festive entertainment to round the day off.
Tuesday - 'Christmas Eve' Today we head for Longtown, driving along Liddesdale we make our way to picturesque Kielder Water and Forest Park. We take a break at the visitor centre before continuing to Bellingham and Hexham, dominated by the Abbey overlooking the market square. This afternoon we return along the path of Hadrian’s Wall, which stretched some 76 miles from the Tyne to the Solway, in time for a chance to relax before dinner and tonight’s entertainment.
Wednesday – ''Christmas Day' This morning we have a drive to the nearby historic Border City of Carlisle. The city has much to offer the visitor – Carlisle Cathedral, founded in 1122, is one of the smallest in the country, the 900 year old castle, built to keep out the Scots, and the Tullie House Museum, detailing the city’s history. The Lanes shopping centre is at the heart of the pedestrianised city centre, with chic boutiques to well-known High Street names. We make our way back to the hotel for tonight’s special Tea Dance, featuring a visit from Santa, bearing a gift for those who have been good! A traditional Christmas Turkey Dinner is served with all the trimmings and a glass of wine, with more festive entertainment to follow.
Thursday – 'Boxing Day' Border Country is our excursion today. We head north into Scotland and the pleasant town of Moffat, with its connections to the wool trade, for a short break before continuing into the mountains, past picturesque St Mary’s Loch, to Selkirk. The Royal Burgh of Selkirk is one of Scotland’s oldest burghs and has associations with William Wallace, Bonnie Prince Charlie and writer Sir Walter Scott. From here we head for Hawick and Gretna, where we have a brief stop before returning to the hotel for our final night of entertainment.
Friday A fine breakfast before bidding farewell to our hosts as we depart for home. We drive through broad Ribblesdale with its peaks and caverns to reach Skipton, where we have time for the bustling market and lunch. Late afternoon we return to our home area after a memorable break among some of England’s finest scenery.
