For 2021 our winter wonderland tour takes us to the Salzkammergut the Lake District region of Austria. The area offers crystal clear lakes and dramatic mountain scenery and its close proximity to Salzburg combined with genuine Austrian hospitality makes the perfect setting for our winter holiday.

Hotel Lohninger-Schober - 3 Star

Located in the village of Hipping, 2km from St Georgen, the family run hotel has easy access to St Georgen and Lake Attersee. All 100 bedrooms are nicely furnished with modern bathrooms and all have a balcony, a lift serves all floors. There is a restaurant, modern bar and a large outside seating area with sun loungers. Leisure facilities include an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and a wellness area with a sauna.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1

Saturday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the mid-morning train sparkling wine and snacks sets the holiday mood. On through Belgium to Germany and our overnight hotel. On through northern France to Reims, before crossing the River Moselle and the German border to reach our overnight hotel in the historic city of Saarbrucken well in time for dinner.

Day 2

Sunday A fine buffet breakfast before we continue through Germany. After crossing the Rhine at Karlsruhe we drive along the edge of the Black Forest by autobahn via Stuttgart and Munich then with snowcapped peaks lining our road to the right we cross the Austrian border. Passing Salzburg we reach St Georgen and our hotel late afternoon. A welcome schnapps precedes dinner this evening.

Day 3

Monday A morning visit to the delightful spa town of Bad Ischl that was home to the summer residence of the Emporers of Austria. This afternoon we visit Hallstatt recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and considered to be the most beautiful lakeside village in the world where the village and church cling to the side of a lakeside mountain.

Day 4

Tuesday A visit to the nearby Baroque city of Salzburg, famed as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This beautiful city with its many famous and historical landmarks is compact, very pedestrian friendly and overlooked by the magnificent Hohensalzburg fortress, easily accessed for rewarding views.

Day 5

Wednesday Departing our hotel after a fine buffet breakfast we make for tiny St Gilgen set beside the waters of Wolfgangsee. We include a cable car ride to the summit of the Zwolferhorn for magnificent views of lakes and mountains. Later we drive around the lake to St Wolfgang, probably the best known of all lakeside resorts, famous for its ‘White Horse Inn, sheltered by the Schafberg Mountain. Here we have a horse drawn sleigh ride fortified by warming schapps.

Day 6

Thursday A day tour of the Austrian lakes we travel to romantic Mondsee, forever linked to ‘The Sound of Music’ stopping at the village of Mondsee with its Baroque Church where Maria married Captain Von Trapp. Then cross the Hollengebirge from Attersee to spend time on the shores of Traunsee.

Day 7

Friday After breakfast we say farewell to our hosts and begin our homeward journey. Retracing our steps we pass Munich and Stuttgart before we arrive at our overnight hotel, Mercure Hotel in Saarbrucken, late afternoon.

Day 8

Saturday Today we travel through France past Reims then on to Calais for the train to Folkestone, to arrive in our home areas to be greeted by our awaiting taxis
