This tour takes in the highlights of Cumbria, considered to be one of the most beautiful regions of the UK. We take in spectacular scenery on this tour, as well as visiting some iconic sites, including Hadrian’s Wall.
Gilsland Hall hotel sits proudly in 140 acres of manicured garden and natural woodland in an idyllic countryside location with spectacular views over the Cumbrian and Northumberland countryside. All of the en-suite rooms have tea and coffee making facilities and the hotel has a lift which serves most floors.
Monday From your front door to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive north to Cumbria and our holiday hotel, the Gilsland Spa Hotel. There will be time to settle in before dinner. After dinner we enjoy the first night of entertainment of our stay.
Tuesday Today we meet our guide and have an excursion taking us south via Castle Carrock through lovely countryside, with the Pennine Hills on our left and the Eden Valley to the right, as we head south to the market town of Penrith. Penrith is rich in history, from the imposing castle ruins to its fine arcades. This afternoon we make our way into the Pennines, climbing spectacular Hartside Pass, on the way to Alston, with its cobbled main street and 17th century buildings, continuing along South Tyne Valley back to our hotel.
Wednesday This morning we meet again with a guide and head for Longtown and drive along Liddesdale as we make our way to picturesque Kielder Water and Forest Park. From here we continue to Bellingham and Hexham, dominated by the Abbey overlooking the market square. This afternoon we return along the path of Hadrian’s Wall, which stretched some 76 miles from Tyne to the Solway.
Thursday Our first stop today in nearby Brampton, where today is market day and we have a chance to browse the stalls before we continue on our way to the historic Border City of Carlisle. The city has much to offer, with Carlisle Cathedral, founded in 1122 and one of the smallest in the country, the 900 year old castle, built to keep out the Scots, as well as the Tullie House Museum which details the city’s history. The Lanes shopping centre is at the heart of the pedestrianised city centre, with chic boutiques to well-known high street names. This afternoon we stop at Houghton Hall Garden Centre, with 3 floors not just devoted to gardening, but with clothes, gifts, the Laird’s Larder food hall and a coffee shop.
Friday After breakfast we bid farewell to our hosts at the Gilslands Spa Hotel. Retracing our outward route we head south, reaching our home area late afternoon.
