Day 2

Monday This morning we head for the coast and South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson before continuing past Marsden Bay, Whitburn and Seaburn. Here we head inland and drive across to the ancient and historic city of Durham, much acclaimed as a World Heritage Site and dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral and Castle, high above the River Wear. Late afternoon we return to the hotel.

While enjoying our cruise we travel under many of the Tyne bridges before we disembark this afternoon and return to the hotel.

We visit the magnificent castle which is home to the family of the Duke of Northumberland, dating back to 1309. The beautifully decorated Alnwick Gardens has many unique features, sculptures and infamous Poison Garden and one of the largest tree houses in the world. After time to look around the castle and gardens we make our way back to hotel for dinner.
