Along the upper reaches of the River Severn and the borders between England and Wales, the countryside of Shropshire shelters some of the most beautiful landscapes and unspoilt towns that you can imagine.
The 3 star Buckatree Hall Hotel is a renowned comfortable country house, with its own mature gardens and private lake, offering a relaxing retreat where you can escape from the pressure of day to day life. Many of the rooms enjoy scenic views of the hotels own lake and gardens, providing a memorable setting in which to relax. All bedrooms are en-suite and have a television and tea/coffee making facilities. This hotel does have a lift. During our stay we have 2 evenings with entertainment.
Monday We depart our home areas and travel to Shropshire where we arrive at Buckatree Hall Hotel in Telford. We have time to settle in before we re-group for dinner.
Tuesday Our day begins with a drive along the picturesque Wenlock Edge to the little village of Acton Scott. Here we visit the Historic Working Farm, conceived to keep alive 19th century farming practices. The farm offers a great insight into life on a Victorian country estate. The farm has featured on TV’s ‘Victorian Farm’. Leaving here we head to historic Ludlow, a medieval town with its imposing castle at the top of the town square. The town has much to offer and we have chance for lunch and to explore before we return to the hotel for dinner.
Wednesday This morning Shrewsbury catches our attention, packed with its timber framed black and white buildings amongst narrow alleyways surrounded by the River Severn. Here we enjoy a relaxing cruise on the River followed by time at leisure for lunch before our afternoon visit to the impressive Ironbridge Gorge where the world’s first iron bridge forms the centre of this World Heritage Site. We make our way to the Museum of the Gorge for a brief insight into life at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.
Thursday This morning we head south to Bridgnorth. Here we join the famous Severn Valley Railway for a delightful ride along the beautiful Severn Valley, passing through lovingly restored stations on the way to Kidderminster. From here we have a short ride to the lovely Georgian Severnside town of Bewdley, where we take our lunch break and enjoy time to look around before we head to the Hallmark Stourport Manor Hotel, former home of Prime Minster Stanley Baldwin, where we enjoy a delicious Cream Tea. Afterwards we make our way back to the hotel for our final evening’s dinner.
Friday After breakfast we head for home. First we travel to Cosford to visit the RAF museum, home to over 70 aircraft, warplanes and missiles. The Cold War exhibition with its interactive kiosks gives us a chance to see what life was like behind the Iron Curtain. Early afternoon we join the motorway for the cross country drive to return to our home area and waiting taxis.
