Sunday From your front door to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive north. Making use of the motorways we spend time for lunch in historic Barnard Castle before arriving at our overnight hotel, the Holiday Inn Dumfries, arriving well in time for dinner.
Monday After breakfast we cross the border, continuing on our way through Southern Scotland. Passing Glasgow we drive alongside the shores of Loch Lomond and over rugged Rannoch Moor to arrive in Fort William and our 3 star hotel late afternoon to enjoy time to settle in before dinner.
Tuesday Today is spent at leisure in Fort William’s dramatic setting under the mighty bulk of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. Why not head into the town and visit the West Highland Museum, which houses a large collection of Jacobite memorabilia or simply sit in a local café and watch the world go by. A light lunch will be available at the hotel. We meet again tonight for dinner.
Wednesday This morning we join the Scotrail train on a round trip of 84 miles to Mallaig. Regarded as one of the world’s most great rail journeys, we follow in the footsteps of Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Express. From views of mighty Ben Nevis, the memorable journey takes us to Glenfinnan and over the famous 21 arch Horseshoe viaduct, the picturesque silver sands of Morar to Mallaig, a busy fishing port and also departure point for the ferry to the Isle of Skye. We have time for a look around the town before we catch the return train to Fort William. A packed lunch will be provided.
Thursday Today we enjoy a spectacular visit to Spean Bridge, with the Commando Memorial, Loch Garry with stunning views along Glen Moriston to Loch Ness and Fort Augustus, where the Caledonian Canal meets Loch Ness. We have time to explore, maybe visit the Caledonian Canal visitor centre before we return along Loch Lochy to Fort William.
Friday Today we bid farewell to our hosts as we drive south to our overnight hotel. We re-cross lonely Rannoch Moor then a lovely wooded drive through ‘Rob Roy Country’ before passing the Wallace Monument to spend time for lunch and sightseeing in historic Stirling. This afternoon we pass Glasgow and make our way back through the rolling scenery of the Borders to reach our overnight hotel in Dumfries in time for dinner.
Saturday Homeward bound by way of the Lake District and Yorkshire with a stop in historic Skipton before arriving in our home areas late afternoon at the end of a scenic Scottish holiday.
