Every year Düsseldorf's Christmas market opens its "gingerbread houses" to visitors; two main market areas home wooden stalls laden with an array of craft items, ornaments and gifts line the narrow winding streets. Delicious cinnamon cakes and mulled red wine are part of the season too, not to forget the festively decorated shop windows and the huge outdoor ice rink.

Saturday A stroll through Düsseldorf with its beautifully illuminated Königsallee is a real treat in the build-up to the festive season. You'll find exclusive, atmospheric Christmas markets in several locations. There's the Art Nouveau-style 'little angel' market in Heinrich-Heine-Strasse. Alternatively, you can browse the traditional stalls in front of the historical town hall, where a local craftsman carves Nativity figures from olive wood.
Sunday This morning we drive the short distance to another great city, Dortmund. The Christmas market here is the biggest in Germany, it has over 300 stalls. Its number one attraction is a gigantic Christmas tree which consists of 1,700 individual fir trees, stands 45 metres tall and is adorned with 13,000 lights – the biggest in the world. This giant tree is decorated with thousands of ornaments and lights which bathe the Christmas proceedings in a festive glow
Monday We depart Düsseldorf soon after breakfast and retrace our route through Belgium to Calais and the Channel Tunnel complex; there will be time for last minute purchases in the Terminal shops before boarding our late afternoon train to Folkestone. We arrive in our home area mid evening after a weekend of festive spirit
