A fantastic tour to the southern gateway to Scotland. The Borders region stretches from the rolling hills in the west to the secluded coves and fishing villages of the dramatic Berwickshire Coastline in the east. The area’s turbulent history created its present day attributes of strong traditions and interesting heritage sites, including the famous abbeys at Melrose, Jedburgh and Dryburgh. We include visits to Edinburgh, New Lanark World Heritage site and Sir Walter Scott’s Abbotsford House.
The 4 star Peebles Hydro Hotel is an ideal base, standing on the site of a 19th century water cures hydro. This charming hotel has comfortable accommodation and stunning views across the beautiful Tweed Valley. Each of the bedrooms are en-suite and well equipped with a TV, telephone, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. Public facilities include a leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool. Sunday From your front door to the waiting Club Class coach for the scenic drive to Scotland. On reaching the border at Gretna we continue north passing Moffat to arrive in Peebles and our hotel, where we enjoy tea or coffee and cake. We have time to settle in before dinner which will be followed by entertainment.
Monday After breakfast we drive to the New Lanark World Heritage Site. We discover the fascinating history of the impressive cotton mill village, New Lanark and the life and times of mill manager and social pioneer Robert Owen. Enter the spirit world and travel back in time on a dark ride. Be taken on a mesmerizing journey of discovery by the ghost of mill girl Annie McLeod who magically appears and tells her story of life in New Lanark in 1820. We return to the hotel to enjoy a Gin tasting in the hotel’s very own 1881 Distillery. Dinner this evening is followed by a ‘Movie Night’.
Tuesday This morning we take a delightful drive following the course of the River Tweed to Selkirk then on to Melrose for a visit to Abbotsford, the magnificent house and gardens built at the foot of the Eildon Hills by Scotland’s most famous author, Sir Walter Scott. We are joined by an informative guide for a tour of the house which is a treasure trove of artefacts and memorabilia of the great man’s life, the tour ends in the garden. We later drive to Scott’s View, a delightful vista of the River Tweed, Eildon Hills and the estate. Back at the hotel a ‘tea and scones’ awaits. Dinner is followed by a ’Quiz Night’
Wednesday After breakfast we depart for a full day visit to the capital city, Edinburgh. We include a guided tour of both the ‘New& Old towns’ including Holyrood and the Royal Mile Later we spend time in the city centre to explore at your leisure before returning to the hotel for a farewell drinks reception, dinner and evening entertainment
Thursday After breakfast we bid farewell to our hosts and make our way home, spending time in historic Richmond before arriving in our home area late afternoon to be greeted by our awaiting taxis.
