Boarding the morning train sparkling wine and snacks set the holiday mood as we travel to Calais. On through Belgium to Holland, arriving at our holiday hotel in Amsterdam early evening. Dinner this evening is included at the hotel.
Saturday This morning we join the coach for an included a tour of Amsterdam. This famous city began as a small medieval settlement on the river Amstel, the site is still the centre today. The plan of the city is dictated by the four main canals that fan out in semi-circles from the central station and most of the interesting sites lie within the canal rings and are best explored on foot. This evening after time for dinner, which is not included in the tour cost, we attend the Light Festival. Innovative and interactive artwork from international designers and artists is displayed along two routes: Water colours which is designed for viewing from the canal sees us board a cruise boat for maximum enjoyment before taking in Illuminade which showcases designs along a walking route. Our return to the hotel is late evening.
Sunday Another interesting day takes us to the picturesque Volendam This small fishing village lies just to the north of Amsterdam and most of the old folk still wear the traditional costumes. Here we have the chance to view the fishing boats as well as visit the many souvenir shops. As no visit to Holland would be complete without a visit to a cheese and clog maker we of course oblige and stop of at an old windmill en-route for a demonstration and tasting. Back in Amsterdam this afternoon we include a visit to a diamond polisher, the entrance is free but alas, no samples!
Monday Today after breakfast we bid farewell to our hosts at the Crowne Plaza Amsterdam Schiphol Hotel, our return drive takes us through Holland to Belgium, where we spend some time in the wonderful historic city of Ghent, before reaching the Shuttle Terminal in Calais for our return train to England. We arrive in our home area mid to late evening after a memorable weekend.
