On this new tour for springtime we feature an interesting selection of attractions. The thriving historic market town of Newark-on-Trent contrasts nicely with Gainsborough’s Old Hall, and Sheffield offers many things to see. Combined with a stay in a 4 star hotel this will be an excellent spring break.
The commanding 17th century building is steeped in history and combines period charm with modern comforts. Facilities include a beautiful Oak panelled reception lounge area, bar and restaurant. En-suite bedrooms, tastefully decorated to the highest standard, include satellite TV, telephone, hairdryer, iron/trouser press and tea/coffee making facilities. There is an impressive leisure centre with heated swimming pool. A lift serves all floors.
Monday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Matlock Bath, where we spend some time, then on to our holiday hotel the Hellaby Hall. We arrive late afternoon when tea/coffee and biscuits will be served.
Tuesday After breakfast we head south to the historic market town of Newark-on-Trent. The ruins of the 12th century castle are a landmark, and the market place is surrounded by historic buildings including the Georgian Town Hall. We have time to explore the own and enjoy lunch before our afternoon visit to Gainsborough Old Hall, a large, medieval manor house. Made famous by visits from Richard lll and Henry Vlll. We see the Great Hall, the original kitchen and much more during our visit
Wednesday After breakfast we head to our first visit for the day, Sheffield Botanical Gardens and Glass Pavilions. The key features of the Gardens are surrounded by winding paths and informal plantings which create distinct character zones, which also offer a stunning oasis of colour. This afternoon we visit the unique 18th century Abbeydale Hamlet to hear all about how the city’s distant past, with workers houses, waterwheels, workshops and much more. Our return is past Manor Park and the ruins of the castle where Mary Queen of Scots was held.
Thursday Today we make a visit to Chesterfield with its busy Flea Market, with over 100 stalls to wander around. Don’t miss the town’s famous landmark- the crooked spire. This afternoon we visit the stunning and unique Bolsover Castle. Set on a hilltop overlooking the Vale of Scarsdale, the 17th century fantasy castle offers panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. Marvel at its brilliantly restored interiors and enjoy refreshments in the café before we make our way back to the hotel for our final evening’s dinner.
Friday Homeward bound with a morning visit to a more modern attraction, the Meadowhall Shopping Centre, before returning to our home and waiting taxis.
