One of our most popular holidays; it gives us great pleasure to return once again to Stresa, the best known resort on Italy’s beautiful Lake Maggiore, with its colourful promenade lined with elegant, stylish hotels and villas. Lovely old squares and narrow cobbled streets in the town centre area are a hive of activity and the terrace bars and restaurants are very popular in the evening. From this ideal base we will be able to enjoy more of this glorious colourful area.
We return once again to the superb family run hotel Astoria, considered to be one of the best hotels in Stresa and guaranteed to offer a truly warm welcome. This modern hotel is centrally situated on the lakeside promenade. All the tastefully furnished bedrooms are air conditioned, en suite with satellite TV, minibar, telephone and hairdryer. The spacious and welcoming restaurant, lounge and bar are complimented by the high standard of service. The leisure facilities include a swimming pool, secluded garden with snack bar, gym and panoramic roof garden with whirl pool, solarium and table tennis. Lifts serve all floors.
Thursday Our door to door service takes us to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the mid morning train a glass of champagne and snacks set the holiday mood. On through France to reach our overnight hotel in Germany.
Friday Driving south over the Vosges mountains, with a stop in beautiful Colmar, we enter Switzerland. Past Lucerne we head into the Alps, over the famous Gotthard Pass to Lake Maggiore and our luxury hotel in Stresa.
Saturday A day at leisure in Stresa. Explore the quaint old town or we can arrange a boat trip to the nearby Borromean Islands.
Sunday A morning visit to Pallanza and the world famous Villa Taranto Gardens. Created by a Scottish gentleman and now owned by the Italian Government, the gardens are wonderfully landscaped with terraces, lotus and lily ponds, waterfalls and over 20,000 species of rare and exotic plants. This afternoon we visit lovely little Lake Orta and include a land train ride for easy access to the cobbled streets of delightful Orta San Giulio.
MondayWe take the Simplon road to Domodossola where we join the ‘Lake Maggiore Express’. This narrow gauge blue and white train, also known as the ‘Centovalli’, is one of the acclaimed railway journeys of the world. It makes its way from Domodossola to Locarno through an unspoilt region commonly referred to as the ‘Valley of the Painters’, passing breathtaking gorges with sparkling waterfalls, over spectacular bridges and through colourful vineyards and chestnut groves. Time is spent in the Swiss resort of Locarno before rejoining the coach and returning to Stresa.
Tuesday This morning we drive eastwards to Lake Lugano, the Swiss Riviera, to spend time in elegant Lugano, wonderfully situated between the peaks of Monte Bre and San Salvatore. We also visit popular Paradiso before our return which includes a visit to the Colossus of San Carlos Borromeo, an enormous bronze statue towering over the southern lake resort of Arona.
