A great new tour takes us to sun drenched Tuscany; the Italian region rich in both history and wonderful architecture and Umbria appropriately named the ‘Green Heart of Italy’. Our chosen base is the spa town of Chianciano Terme the perfect location for exploring this fascinating region. We include unlimited wine with dinner and a free bar for 5 hours each evening.
The family run 4 star Grand Hotel Excelsior is close to the heart of the new town. Elegance aptly describes this grand hotel from the spacious reception area to the lounge with its elegant furnishings. The ensuite bedrooms are traditionally furnished and have modern marble bathrooms, air conditioning, TV and hairdryer. There is a noted restaurant, bar and a fabulous rooftop pool and terrace. Lifts serve all floors.
Monday Our door to door service takes us to the waiting coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the morning shuttle train to Calais, champagne and snacks set the holiday mood. Through France to Reims and our overnight hotel, the Mercure in Reims.
Tuesday Continuing south we take the old road through rolling countryside via the enormous rail viaduct at Chaumont to Dijon, capital of Burgundy, then on towards the French Alps and our overnight hotel, the Mercure Chamonix in the famous resort at the foot of Mont Blanc.
Wednesday Through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to enter Italy and along the scenic Aosta Vally to Milan. Our road is now along the Apennines, the backbone of Italy to Modena, home of Ferrari, to reach Umbria and our holiday hotel late afternoon.
Thursday A relaxing day in our resort. Enjoy the facilities and surroundings of our hotel, perhaps visit one of the thermal baths or simply enjoy strolling around the town.
Friday An excursion into the mountains today to the hilltop pilgrimage town of Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis. This charming town built along the slopes of Monte Subasio is dominated by the Rocca, an impressive medieval fortress guarding Italy’s oldest Gothic church built over the tomb of St Francis.
SaturdayWe travel to Montepulciano. This small town, surrounded by fortified walls, is famous for its excellent wines and is packed with charm. Its winding street, the Corso, climbs up to the main square on top of the hill. Later we drive to Lake Trasimeno and the picturesque lakeside town of Passignano. The lake is Italy’s fourth largest but one of the shallowest with an abundance of wild life.
Sunday A relaxing drive south to the grand medieval hill town of Orvieto home of one of Italy’s best loved white wines. We return to our resort for an afternoon at leisure.
Monday Our homeward journey begins as we head north to Siena then view the famous Tuscan hilltop village of San Gimignano then by motorway to the Riviera coastline for a scenic drive beside the blue Mediterranean to Genoa. Later we head into the mountains and through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to return to our overnight hotel in Chamonix, arriving well in time for dinner.
Tuesday North past Geneva and through the glorious French Savoy region to Dijon before returning to the capital of champagne and our overnight hotel in Reims.
Wednesday A fine breakfast before making a visit to the magnificent gothic cathedral of Reims. We include a short tour of the city, passing the incredible Roman Arch before using the motorway to return to Calais for the mid afternoon shuttle back to the UK. We reach our home area early evening at the end of a memorable Italian holiday.
