Join us as we revisit this wonderful region of Germany with its mighty Rivers, truly romantic waterways overlooked by fairytale castles, vine clad slopes and quaint wine villages and towns, each with their own Christmas Market bringing assuring of a wonderful festive atmosphere with the aromas of roast almonds, warm gingerbread, hot chestnuts and glühwein. Our tour is based in the beautiful Rhineland town of Boppard and proved extremely popular last year.
This stylish 4 star hotel is situated on the main riverside promenade and only a stone’s throw from the centre of the town. All of the elegant bedrooms are en-suite. The hotel has a swimming pool and a lift serves all floors.
Thursday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Once in Calais we join the French autoroute to Dunkirk and travel through Northern France, we cross into Germany at Aachen and then leaving the autobahn in the rugged Hunsruck to arrive at the our chosen resort of Boppard and the Bellevue Hotel late afternoon. A welcoming glass of wine precedes dinner this evening.
Friday A lovely excursion today as we follow the course of the mighty Rhine, with fairytale castles, steeped in history, high above us. We spend time in the historic riverside resort of Bacharach, a town of half timbered buildings and flower bedecked squares looked over by the ruins of the castle. Next we journey to Bingen where we take the ferry over to the famous town of Rudesheim to spend time at its colourful Christmas Market; here we are greeted with the delicious aromas of mulled wine, sweet baked goods and roasted chestnuts.
Saturday Today we travel to the quieter Moselle valley. We drive through the wooded hills of the Hunsruck Hills to the most picturesque of resorts, Cochem, nestling prettily beneath its late Gothic Imperial Castle. This afternoon we visit one of the local wine producer’s for an interesting insight into the process and, of course, a tasting!
Sunday Another interesting day as we first visit the magical Christmas shop in St Goar with an optional schnapps tasting then cross the Rhine to climb to the top of the legendary Loreley Rock. We continue along the east bank of the river to historic Koblenz sited on the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine. Here we find the interesting Wine Village and The Koblenz Christmas market, one of the largest in the Rhineland- Palatinate wine growing region, it offers all the flavours of Christmas including a Christmas bakery where stollen and many other famous German Christmas cakes and biscuits are made in front of your eyes. We return to the hotel late afternoon.
MondayWe say farewell to the Rhineland to journey home. Travelling via the Eifel and Ardennes and with a lunch stop in Belgium we continue homeward before our late afternoon train to Folkestone. We arrive in our home area mid evening.
