For 2019 we have a two centre holiday with a difference, Zermatt at the foot of the mighty Matterhorn, an international resort with traffic free streets, and Davos, probably the best known of the winter sports resorts. The difference is the journey between the two, part of which is on the Glacier Express, known as Europe’s slowest express train as it winds its way through some of Switzerland’s most magnificent scenery.
This beautiful 4 star hotel is located in the centre of Zermatt within easy reach of the station. All the spacious tastefully ensuite bedrooms have TV and hairdryer. Public rooms include a spacious bar with a variety of different seating areas and cosy alcoves, a TV lounge and noted restaurant in a beautiful setting. A lift serves all floors. In addition the Alex Hotel has a comprehensive leisure centre with and indoor pool, sauna, solarium and fitness room.
The Sporthotel is situated just below the famous shopping promenade of Davos-Platz. All the large, comfortable bedrooms have private bathroom, cable TV, minibar, telephone, radio and balcony. Amenities at the hotel include two restaurants, piano bar with entertainment and a charming lounge. Sunday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone during which a light breakfast is served. Boarding the mid morning train a glass of champagne and snacks sets the holiday mood. On through France to our 3 star overnight hotel in Troyes.
Monday We continue through Burgundy to Dijon and Besancon, through the hills of the French Jura to Switzerland and Lake Geneva. Now surrounded by snow capped peaks we follow the Rhone Valley to reach Tasch for the transfer to Zermatt late afternoon.
Tuesday A day at leisure in Zermatt. Make use of the many cable cars or take the train to Gornergrat for unrivalled views of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa mountains.
Wednesday This morning we board the Glacier Express for the wonderful ride from Zermatt down to Brig then a steady climb into the heart of the mountains. Once underway the train winds its way through the heart of Switzerland, over the Oberalp Pass at a height of 6,700ft continuing through the Swiss ‘Grand Canyon’ and alpine scenery that is out of this world! Journeys end is in Chur where the coach will be waiting to take you to the hotel.
Thursday Another scenic delight today for our excursion that sees us visit the international resort of St Moritz. Leaving Davos we follow the Fluelabach, our road passing between the lofty peaks of the Weisshorn on our left and the Schwarzhorn on our right to cross the Fluela Pass before descending into the Engadine, or as we know it, the Inn Valley. St Moritz is split into two parts, the spa and the lakeside winter resort where we make a good stay.
Friday A morning visit to the nearby resort of Klosters with the afternoon free to relax in Davos. Make use of the hotels excellent leisure facilities or take a ride on one of the cable cars to the surrounding peaks.
Saturday This morning we begin our homeward journey driving beside the waters of Lake Zurich to the French border at Basle. We spend time in one of the picturesque wine villages of the Alsace then over the Vosges Mountains and through the Forest of Argonne to our overnight hotel, the 3 star Mercure in Reims.
Sunday The final day of our tour sees us spend time at the magnificent gothic masterpiece, Reims cathedral. We have a short tour as we leave the city and travel through northern France to Calais for the late afternoon shuttle train back to England.
