One of our most popular pre-Christmas tours returns once again for 2019. Monschau is without doubt, one of the most beautiful towns in Germany, situated in the Eiffel Mountains. It is an idyllic town of narrow steep roofed, half timbered houses and inns clustered along the banks of the River Rur – its Christmas market is simply magical. We also include a visit to Valkenburg is a small town in the south of Holland close to the German border that offers something different and truly special for Christmas with the largest underground Christmas Market in Europe.
The 4 star Michel & Friends Hotels is located in the beautiful town of Monschau and is just a 5 minute walk to the town centre. Hotel facilities include an indoor pool, sauna, bar and restaurant. Each of the 99 ensuite bedrooms have a TV and hairdryer. Although the hotel does not have walk in showers, a lift serves all floors.
Friday Our door to door service takes you to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive to Folkestone. Boarding the train a glass of fizz and snacks set the holiday mood. On through Belgium, past Bruges and Brussels to reach the German Eiffel and our hotel in Monschau. We arrive late afternoon to a welcoming glass of gluhwein, with time to settle in before dinner.
Saturday A full day visit to Holland and the romantic town of Valkenburg and it’s truly special Markets. In the Municipal cave of Valkenburg situated at the bottom of the ruined castle sits the largest and oldest underground Christmas Market in Europe. You will be amazed by the beautiful settings and decorations, which are in complete harmony with the countless stalls offering Christmas gifts and other luxuries. The spacious, long drawn-out galleries that characterize this cave invite you to while away the hours against a musical backdrop in a Christmas cave equipped with excellent facilities. Other markets include the smaller Velvet Cave with beautiful decorations, murals and a unique 18th century chapel.
Sunday A day at leisure in Monschau. Enjoy plenty of time for Christmas shopping at the colourful market, explore the quaint picturesque town or make use of the hotel’s excellent leisure facilities before we re-group for our final evening’s dinner.
MondayWe depart Monschau soon after breakfast and retrace our route through Belgium making a visit with time for lunch in the historic town of Ypres set in the heart of the 1st World War Battlefields. Feeling refreshed, we continue to Calais for the afternoon train to Folkestone, arriving in our home area mid evening.
