After the great success of our previous Swiss adventures, we are happy to return to the Bernese Oberland, probably the most scenic part of Switzerland with its snowcapped peaks and bright sparkling lakes. Aeschi, our chosen resort, is at the heart of this beautiful mountain landscape, set on a sunny terrace overlooking the town of Spiez and Lake Thun. Our excursions offer the chance to enjoy the best of this wonderland and include a visit to the foot of the awesome north face of the Eiger and a horse drawn sleigh ride.
This charming 4 star hotel is built in traditional Swiss rustic style with balconies and lies in a quiet village location. All the spacious en-suite bedrooms have satellite TV, hairdryer, minibar and balcony. Public rooms include a tasteful restaurant and welcoming bar. Two terraces offer relaxed ambience and tremendous views. Other hotel facilities include a sauna, steam bath and solarium. A lift serves all floors.
Friday From your front door to the waiting Club Class coach then on to Folkestone for the shuttle crossing to Calais, during which a glass of champagne and snacks are served. Through northern France to the champagne region and Reims where we find our overnight accommodation. We arrive with time to relax before this evening’s dinner.
Saturday Departing after breakfast, we continue our journey through France, westwards past emotive Verdun and over the Vosges Mountains, then through the broad Rhine Valley past Strasbourg and Colmar. This afternoon we enter Switzerland at Basle then pass Berne to climb to the unspoilt village of Aeschi, arriving late afternoon.
SundayWe enjoy a full day excursion to view to majestic peaks of the Bernese Oberland including the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch. First we visit Lauterbrunnen and its noted waterfall, the Staubach, after partaking in Brandy coffees we continue our scenic drive to Grindelwald, a charming village nestling at the foot of the mighty Eiger and huge glaciers. Here we include a horse drawn sleigh ride fortified by warming schnapps.
Monday A full day visit to the Swiss capital Bern. Set on sharp horseshoe bend of the River Aare. With its narrow cobbled streets, noted fountains and wonderful old buildings including the magnificent Confederation Parliament, the city is best explored on foot. The symbol of the city is a bear and we include time at the famous Bear Pit to hopefully see the residents!
Tuesday This morning we cross the gentle Brunig Pass and travel by way of the turquoise waters of Lake Sarnen to spend time in the ‘Heart of Switzerland’ at the lakeside town of Lucerne. Noted for its wonderful bridges including the famous Kappel Bridge, with its hundreds of painted frescoes, and the beautiful Lion Sculpture. The town lies in a sheltered position at the foot of Mount Pilatus and offers a host of eating places and easy lakeside walks.Mid afternoon we return to the hotel with time to relax before our final evening meal at the Aeschi Park.
Wednesday Leaving our Alpine resort we head back to Bern, our road lined by snow-capped mountains then on to the French border at Basle. We visit a picturesque Alsace wine village before passing Strasbourg on our way back to our overnight hotel, which is once again in Reims.
Thursday A leisurely breakfast before our departure. We head north to make a refreshment stop in beautiful Arras, then continue on to Calais for the afternoon shuttle back to Folkestone. We arrive in our home area mid evening.
