Harrogate draws its elegance and style from its 18th century history, when it became a spa town and a haunt for the rich and famous who came to take the ‘waters’. Stylish shops and restaurants mix with independent antique, designer and high street shops. The town offers something for all whether you are on the cobbled streets of the Montpellier Quarter or the tree lined main streets.
This charming 18th century hotel has many original features from the Victorian era. Located just a short walk from the town centre and Valley Gardens, the hotel is ideal for this holiday. All of the bedrooms are en-suite and have a TV, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a lift that serves all floors.
Monday From your front door to the waiting Club Class coach for the drive north to Yorkshire. We arrive mid-afternoon at the Carin Hotel in Harrogate, where we have time to settle in before dinner.
Tuesday We collect our packed lunches before we join the coach and make our way to the City of York. Here we have the day at leisure to enjoy the city’s many offerings including the National Railway Museum, Jorvik Centre and York Minster. We have time to explore the famous Shambles as well as its narrow alleyways before we return to the hotel with time before dinner.
Wednesday This morning we have a short drive to the village of Ripley to enjoy a guided tour of historic Ripley Castle, home of the Ingilby family for over 700 years. The castle has many stories to tell, including Oliver Cromwell being held at gunpoint in the library. From here we return to the hotel for a light lunch of soup and sandwiches. This afternoon is spent at leisure with chance to explore Harrogate. With its broad tree-lined boulevards, antique shops and shopping centres, it is little wonder that the town is often a frequent winner of the Britain in Bloom award. Harrogate also boasts the world famous Betty’s Tearoom which was founded in 1919. Later this evening we meet again for dinner at the hotel.
Thursday After breakfast we drive to Ripon, with its magnificent Cathedral which is well worth a visit. We have time to wander around the town and browse the stalls at the weekly market which are set up in the beautiful market place. Our return sees us head along Nidderdale for a scenic ride via Summerbridge and Dacre back to the hotel for a light lunch and time to relax at our hotel before our final evening’s dinner.
Friday After breakfast we collect our final packed lunches before bidding farewell to our hosts and making our way home. Arriving mid-afternoon we are greeted by our awaiting taxis.
