For 2019 it gives us pleasure to return to the Costa Verde, the rugged scenic coast of Northern Spain, known as ‘The Green Coast’. The area is rich in diverse natural beauty from its golden beaches, picturesque fishing villages and historic ports, to the magnificent snow-capped mountains of the Picos de Europa. Enjoy the cruise to Spain aboard the Brittany Ferries flagship – the Pont Aven. This is a truly wonderful way to travel to Spain and ensures a relaxed arrival, allowing passengers to be ready to explore this delightful region.
The Pont Aven was launched in 2004 and has dramatically improved sailing times to Spain. The ship’s stunning features include a superb pool and leisure area. A range of entertainment and relaxation options, normally only found on cruise ships, are available including shows, performances with live music, magic shows, quizzes and DJs, as well as two on-board cinemas. For relaxation take a stroll along the Promenade on deck six which allows you to walk all around the ship, while the ship’s top deck offers a calm spot to sit and enjoy the sea air and incredible views, particularly when entering or leaving the port. All cabins have air-conditioning with individual temperature control, en-suite bathrooms, comfortable seating, radio and tea/coffee making facilities. The ship offers a range of high-quality dining options, including the a la carte and self-service restaurants, enabling something for everyone.
Set in a beautiful location and just a few steps away from the long sandy Berra beach close to the small town of Santona, the 4 star Hotel Juan de la Cosa offers excellent service and magnificent views of the local area. The air conditioned, ensuite bedrooms have a TV, hairdryer and telephone. The hotel offers a restaurant, bar, lounge, an indoor pool and Jacuzzi. Lifts serve all floors.
Sunday Our door to door service takes you from your home to the waiting Club Class coach for the journey south to Plymouth to join the Pont Aven. Once on board there will be time to settle into our cabins and familiarise ourselves with the ships facilities prior to our sailing.
Monday A morning at sea before arriving in Santander where we disembark and take the coast road to our hotel. Upon arrival there is plenty of time to take a stroll around the area or relax before dinner this evening.
Tuesday A full day excursion into the stunning Picos de Europa Mountain range, travelling to Potes through the Hermida Gorge famed for its strong cheeses, and then on to Fuentes De with the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular cable car ride (admission not included). We travel back to the hotel via the beautiful coastal villages of San Vicente de la Barquera.
Wednesday We visit San Sebastian, Northern Spain’s seaside secret, built around a vast oyster shaped bay ‘La Concha’ with a mountain at each end. The city is a fine mix of old and new from the tamarind lined promenade to the narrow streets of the old town. After plenty of free time we return to the hotel for dinner.
Thursday A day at leisure in Santona. Why not sample the local tapas, take a stroll or enjoy the beach.
Friday Another gem this morning as we spend time in Comillias, which in addition to a beautiful beach has some of the most important Art Nouveau buildings in Cantabria, including the Sobrellano Palace Chapel and the Pantheon, the Pontifical University and, of course, the brilliant El Capricho by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. Later we take a scenic coastal drive along the glorious Costa Verde on our way back to the hotel.
Saturday A leisurely breakfast before driving to the village of Santillana del Mar, considered the most beautiful in Spain. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site the village is famous for its medieval houses and cobbled streets. After time at leisure to explore, we visit the lovely old town and port of Santander a real mix of ancient and modern.
Sunday This morning we include a scenic boat ride around the Bay of Santona before visiting the delightful resort and fishing port of Castro Urdialles, dominated by is enormous Gothic cathedral. The narrow streets are lined by houses with ornate wooden balconies. We return to our resort for an afternoon at leisure.
Monday A relaxing morning before we return to Santander for the sailing to Portsmouth. The ship sails through the night, allowing us to relax this evening and make use of the excellent facilities.
